Common Sense Comes to Town!

Common sense is the most fairly distributed thing in the world, for each one thinks he is so well-endowed with it that even those who are hardest to satisfy in all other matters are not in the habit of desiring more of it than they already have. (Descartes)

“I Bought the Company”

The oldest amongst you will no doubt remember the famous catchphrase in the advertisement by Remington’s for its electric shavers a few years ago. Victor Kiam, then president for Remington, concluded with these popular words : « I liked it so much I bought the company. »

The motto obviously gained a following through the years. For example, James Heselden bought the American company Segway last December. For those who have just joined Western civilization, the Segway is a transportation device similar to a motorized child’s scooter.

Victor Kiam eventually was fortunate enough to die of old age in 2001, at 74 years old. Unfortunately for Mr Heselden, it seems that life in the fast line in the transportation industry brings its share of risks. Indeed, he was found dead today, after falling off a cliff to land in a river while he was going about driving, of all things, a Segway.

The irony could have sprung forth from a cheesy American soap. Alas, there isn’t really a morale to this story.
