Common Sense Comes to Town!

Common sense is the most fairly distributed thing in the world, for each one thinks he is so well-endowed with it that even those who are hardest to satisfy in all other matters are not in the habit of desiring more of it than they already have. (Descartes)

Bring Youth to the Poll Booth

Posted on | April 7, 2011 | No Comments

You want to bring your modest contribution to society but have no clue where to begin? You don’t have it in you to volunteer? You are already having a hard time making ends meet, and are not able to financially contribute to your favourite charities? Well, here is a fantastic, limited time offer for redemption: this upcoming election, bring a young voter with you to the poll booth!

Indeed, as published by French daily Rue Frontenac, Elections Canada is worried about the low involvement of students in election, especially given the end of the winter term, and the massive migration of students from their place of study back to their hometowns.

These young adults however often have strongly held opinions and beliefs concerning social policies and their society’s evolution. They may forget to express it given that other worries tend to take over their lives once school is over.

So here’s a little gesture which requires neither time nor money: grab a young person aged between 18 and 24, and invite him or her, by force if need be, to travel with you and vote in the upcoming election… OK, maybe not by force… Do enjoy the occasion however to connect with this youth, there hopes, ideals and, why not, try and remember your own self at this previous stage in your life.

The transmission of social values, including democratic values, is after all our collective responsibility. Here’s your chance to do a small part and make this a better world.
