Common Sense Comes to Town!

Common sense is the most fairly distributed thing in the world, for each one thinks he is so well-endowed with it that even those who are hardest to satisfy in all other matters are not in the habit of desiring more of it than they already have. (Descartes)

The Way of the Sword

Posted on | July 5, 2011 | No Comments

Deep inside the forge

The hammer sings loudly! But

We hear the raindrops

The sweat is flowing

The red-hot metal twisted

Beaten, tormented

The naked blacksmith

Is almost choking inside:

The air is but smog

Unrestrained passion

Clenched white, just like a blade

Is shaped in a fire

Raw emotion, which

Makes us simultaneously

Both sword and blacksmith

Every hammer blow

Unleashes Pleiades!

Yet the blade hardens

With the utmost grace

It slices the lone petal

Of water-lily!

Bent a hundred times,

Tormented a hundred times

And now dusk sets in

Here is a passion

Which refines us, in summer

A glistening sword

The daimyo walks proud

A sunny, grassy clearing

Welcomes the master

Century old man:

The weapon hangs from his belt

As if in a nap

One hundred years more

He will reign. Free from evil

Even snakes flee him

The sun shines upon

The strongest weapon: a sword

Never unsheathed

His passion remains

Contained; it serves him always

With warmest pleasure

Both sword and blacksmith,

Steel tempered in rain of tears

Proud and resplendent

Secret emotions:

Stemming from the same water

You shine on as well
