Common Sense Comes to Town!

Common sense is the most fairly distributed thing in the world, for each one thinks he is so well-endowed with it that even those who are hardest to satisfy in all other matters are not in the habit of desiring more of it than they already have. (Descartes)

Harper Fails at Math 101

According to our good Conservative government, a tougher stance against crime is an immediate priority for Canadians. Harper et al are thus ready to increase exponentially the cost related to the prison system. In order to pay for it all, they simply suggest that provinces should cut in social services.

Let’s look at things objectively; something our government is no longer able of doing. Crime rates are freefalling in Canada. Vic Toews, minister for Justice, pretends that it is only the reporting of such crimes which is dropping. Between you and me, a murder does not need to be reported to be included in the statistics. On the other hand, those crimes that need to be reported are increasing slightly, a clear signal that the population no longer tolerates certain behaviour.

Worse still is the suggestion to cut social services when all indicators demonstrate that these will be even more necessary in coming years. An aging population will create even more pressure on the health care system, and on pensions. The number of students enrolled in postsecondary education programs has been constantly rising for the past 15 years.

In fact, this government’s policies go against the evolution of the population’s needs. It’s as if Harper was driving his car with his eyes fixed on the rear view mirror instead of the road. That’s when accidents happen; and crashes can sometimes be disastrous.
